A Conversation with…Mike Schreiber

Ten years ago, I had to interview Common for The Source. The interview took place at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in the Village. Mike Schreiber was the photographer assigned for the story and we ended up talking while we waited for Common. After five minutes of conversation, I decided that Mike was arrogant, cocky and annoying. Ten years later, he still is. He’s also one of my favorite photographers. He’s completely self-taught, has shot everything from dogs to prisoners to rappers for everyone from The Source to Vibe and GIANT. (Check out his website) I called Mike up this morning and asked him to tell me about his ten favorite photographs and the stories behind them. Here’s how the conversation went down.

10 Honest Questions on…The Grammys

I told TH to pick up some ice cream on the way home last night. I turned on the television promptly at 8, even though I couldn’t start watching right away. Wanted to make sure I’d be able to rewind. At Last…

At Last...someone knows who I am...

I sang the damn song before any of you fools!!!

So yesterday, Etta James broke fool on my girl Beyonce. (And on my president. But I’m not touching that).

I listened to the audio on Wendy Williams’ radio show. And after I picked up my jaw off the floor, I could only shake my head.

I must confess, I don’t know much about Etta James.

But of course, I do think of the song At Last when I hear her name.

But let’s get a few things straight here.

I wish I could sing…

Retro Microphone (vector)

When I see that microphone, I want to grab it, tilt it back, open my mouth and have something wonderful come pouring out.

No. I really wish I could sing.

It’s almost unnatural.

And I don’t mean sing a little bit. Carry a tune just enough to get by. I mean, I wish I could really sing. Like, Jennifer-Hudson-at-the-Superbowl-sing. Yes, she was lip-syncing. But she sang it like that somewhere!

My obsession is mostly my mother’s fault.
