Yay or Nay with Little Miss Brown: Nicole Crowder

August 28, 2009

I should have known better than to have Haftime trackdown our next candidate for Yay or Nay with LilMissBrown.

Heather is young and hip and cute. So of course, all of her friends would be young and cute and hip and happening and with it and together.

Introducing Nicole Crowder. She blogs over at thechestnutorange and lives and works in Washington DC as a photo editor. She also runs an online book club for women called Uptown Literatie with her friend Whitney. They have a weekly book review column on She’s also a music fiend and a foodie.

Check out Miss Thing and all her effortlessly cool chic. I hate her. Let’s see what LilMissBrown has to say about shoes from Payless and Salvation Army skirts. Hmph.

Haftime’s New Music Monday. With No Haftime

August 24, 2009

Haftime usually schools me to what’s new and hot in music.

But she has like, a life, or something. Had no time for me today.

So I’m sitting here this morning, bumping the same song on repeat that I’ve been listening to all weekend.

I know Haftime wouldn’t approve. But this is MY new music monday since she left me stranded.

Check out the conversation I had with myself about this new song I’m LOVING.

New Music

Heather A. Faison, AKA Haftime, is the young whippersnapper with her ears to the street. I’m the old fogey who’s trying desperately to keep up with what’s new and hot.

After communicating via emails, text message, Tweet and carrier pigeon, I finally got a chance to meet Haftime, live and in living color. Lovely girl.

You know how you meet someone and you just know right away that’s your people? That’s how I feel about Haftime, (and her girl Georgia).

We met up in Prospect Park in Brooklyn on Sunday. My best friend Ukachi throws an annual potluck picnic in the park to celebrate the end of summer. I asked Haftime to trek up from Philly so we could do a live version of New Music Monday.

It’s a little messy and all over the place. But it was fun.

Should out to TG for her excellent camera work. And that incessant coughing you hear in the background? That’s Tog. She’s a bit under the weather.

This week? I got hip to the original Rhianna, another one of those Brits Haftime loves so much, a lukewarm effort from Sasha Fierce and poet-turned-rapper Amanda Diva.

New Music Monday…Maybe? Sorta? Kinda?

August 17, 2009

Had an awesome weekend. Met new online friends in real life. Met old friends in real life.

Life was good.

I got to meet the super awesome Haftime–in person! And we checked out new music together, live from Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

Alas, I kept Haftime out too late. She didn’t make it back to Philly in time to layout our post.

So check in tomorrow for New Music Monday. It will be oh so worth it. Here’s a sneak peek!

Happy Monday!

Check back tomorrow to hear what we listened to!

TWA–The Only Way To Fly

Don't be fooled. This hairstyle takes WORK. Believe me, I know.

Don't be fooled. This hairstyle takes WORK. Believe me, I know.

At age four, I ran away screaming anytime my mother approached me with a comb.

Thirty years later, I feel the same way.

I. hate. hair.

I hate combing it. I hate styling it. I hate hot combs, relaxers, weave, grease, brushes, blow-outs, hood dryers, sponge rollers, hard rollers. I hate getting it braided, twisted, loc’d, cut, shampooed, conditioned, wrapped, rinsed, dyed, fried and laid to the side.

Why can’t we all just rock smooth clean baldies?

Why can’t we place an emphasis on who has the shiniest dome? That’s a style I could compete with.

But alas, beauty and hair have been intrinsically linked since the beginning of time. Much to my chagrin.
